'Horizon Event'

Tapotupotu holds deep cultural significance for Māori since it is where spirits journey along the coast to the pōhutukawa tree at Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga). On a road trip with friends, I was treated to a moody reef break with icy blue hues and a roaring offshore wind, in the area where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea meet. The spray kicked up to the horizon was a sight to behold. A few months later, we were out camping again, and the film Event Horizon came up in conversation. I put pastel to paper shortly after, and with a twist of words, ‘Horizon Event’ was born.
